Education Programs

Stand Strong - Our signature and immersive character education program revolving around five element of characters - Determination, Courage, Teamwork, Fairness, and Responsibility. Students experience a powerful, integrated series of 14 sessions over a three-month period of time involving museum activities, club/school sessions, field trips, community service projects, and presentations from Boston athletes. The goal of the program is to help at-risk middle school students build the type of character that will enable them to make the right choices in the face of drugs, violence, bullying, and other dangers. Grades 6-8.

Score with Character - Our core museum program focusing on the importance of character to success in sports - and in life. Students engage in a museum activities designed to guide them through the museum and encourage them to utilize interactive exhibits and examine artifacts. Museum staff leads students through a discussion of the Stand Strong concepts of Determination, Courage, Fairness, Teamwork, and Responsibility, which serve as the instructional focus and emphasis of this program. Can be adapted to fit all age groups.

Sports Figures - Students use statistics and information throughout the Museum to solve math problems. This math program can be used in conjunction with ESPN's Sports Figures video series. Museum staff works with teachers to develop questions suitable to students' abilities and needs. Grades 3-8.

Careers in Sports - Students learn about non-athletic careers in the sports industry. Speakers discuss their educational background and the paths they took to accomplish their goals. Students visit The Sports Museum before or after they listen to the speaker. Classes are encouraged to have questions prepared for the speaker. Grades 5-12.

The Will McDonough Writing Contest - Our annual writing contest launched in January of each year named after the legendary Boston Globe sportswriter and sponsored by the Globe and Bank of America. The contest is designed to encourage the development of language and writing skills while incorporating the topic of sports and the Stand Strong concepts of Determination, Courage, Teamwork, Fairness, and Responsibility. To that end, students create and submit a fiction or non-fiction essay relating to specific sports topics. The winners are honored with a ceremony at The Sports Museum and everyone who participates in the contest receives a prize that also serves as an incentive to keep writing. Grades 4-12.
